The buzz of familiar voices pulled Julia out of darkness.
She struggled to rise up. Called out in a hoarse whisper.
“Wait…Manuel…”

Dr. Simmons returned to her bedside.
“Julia, you’re awake. I’m thrilled.”

“Manuel…get me…out here…”

“That wouldn’t be the best thing for you right now. You’ve experienced a severe trauma. You need to rest.”

“I need…out here…damn you…”

Ron appeared. The scolding parent.
“Julia. Is that how you thank those who are trying to help you?”

“Fuck…you…Ron…”

Dr. Simmons intervened.
“Julia, please…don’t get excited. Remember your relaxation response. Close your eyes and breathe evenly.”

“Don’t need…relax…need to out here…now…”

“Julia, darling,” Ron said, “you’re in no condition to go anywhere.”

“I ready…leave…now…”

“I beg to differ, Ms. Longacre.”
Dr. Simmons reached towards the nightstand near the head of Julia’s bed.
“Look at this and I think you will agree with me.”

Dr. Simmons held a rectangular hand mirror in front of Julia.
She looked upon her face. But not her reflection.
A visage with a gaping mouth. Terror filled eyes. A mask of panic.

“God…no…not ‘gain…”

Julia drew a breath. Sealed her lips.
The scream ignited in her guts.
Burned its way up her throat.

julia screamingShe jerked on the restraints.
Tried to bring hand to mouth.
Her body convulsed.

The face in the mirror pulsed.
Choking on fear, Julia had no choice but to give in.

Her mouth flew open.
She screamed.
And screamed.
And screamed.
And screamed.
And screamed.
